Beginner American Sign Language

Have you ever said, “I’ve always wanted to learn sign language!”? Well, here is an opportunity for you to learn some basic communication skills to assist you when interacting with individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing. Students will be introduced to the fundamentals of American Sign Language: gesture, mime and facial expressions; to develop what they can already do anturally. These features form the foundation of the basic skill set needed for American Sign Language (ASL). Students will learn some vocabulary, grammar and fingerspelling used by individuals in the American Deaf Community. Students will be asked to think visually and demonstrate the ASL fundamentals during in-class activities. Handouts will be provided.
