Brick Layer

The Masonry Construction Program at SUN Area Career & Technology Center prepares graduates for job entry skills with intense education in Brick/Block , Concrete, Stone, Tile and Stucco Masonry. Students learn the skills, principles, technologies and building techniques of residential and commercial construction. The curriculum is individualized and emphasizes hands on skill development, layout, blueprint reading, construction materials, construction methods, cost projections and estimates, project management, construction safety and VICA student organizations and leadership development. 

The Masonry Construction Program offers all qualified students co-op release in the third quarter and offers the opportunity to advance into post-secondary education into building construction management, vocational instructor, estimator, draftsperson or architectural design.

Facts & Myths about the Masonry Construction Field

  • Fact: Masons are among the best paid workers in the nation. The salary range goes from $13.50 to $ 48.75 per hour plus benefits and pension plans.

  • Fact: Their take home pay is equal or exceeds the wages of many college trained white-collar workers

  • Fact: Success is a life long learning attitude and is not terminated at 12th grade but requires a high degree of skilled training. Advancement into supervision requires post secondary training and high levels of technical training.

  • Fact: Masonry Construction needs more highly motivated and academically talented individuals sent from the home schools to apply technical and theoretical training before going on to college. Example: Engineering and Architects (German Model)

  • Myth: Masonry is dirty and mean low wages and non advancement.

  • Fact: Masonry is multi-diversified: laborers, craftsman, estimators, contractors, tilesetters, plasterers, bricklayers, blocklayers, stone masons, concrete masons, horticultural landscaping, and sales to mention a few that pay high wages.

  • Myth: Construction Trades mean low IQ and low motivation.

  • Fact: Who designs, builds, erects and estimates construction cost? Highly intelligent individuals with a motivation to make mega dollars and the skills to make it happen.

  • Myth: Education is terminated at 12th grade

  • Fact: To succeed you need a commitment to life long learning and high levels of technical and skill training

  • Myth: Voc-Ed is for non achievers

  • Fact: Look around and ask people that service you where they got their education? Chances are it's Technical Education

Individuals with a desire to succeed who possess high academic standards, problem-solving skills, willingness to take on challenging problems, ability to handle hard mental and physical work, team players, and a desire to ensure that Pennsylvania businesses have access to a continuous supply of highly paid skilled and knowledgeable workers.
