The SUN Area Technical Institute will operate a Safety Inspection Mechanic Training Program as developed and implemented by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. Listed below are important student guides to the operation of this program:
(12) hours minimum; two (4) hour sessions and one (3) hour session of instruction; (1) hour for Tactile One or Two test, (1 1/2) hour for Tactile Three test.
The course book cannot be reviewed in detail within the 12 hour Mechanic Certification Course. The course emphasis will be on passenger cars and light trucks. Additional information is included in the manual for other types of vehicles. It becomes the responsibility of the mechanic seeking certification to review the additional sections outlined in below. Special emphasis should be on those type vehicles the mechanic has selected for certification.
SUN Area Technical Institute will test (16) passenger cars and light trucks, (4) motorcycles, and (8) heavy trucks during the Inspection Mechanic Certification Course. Entry into the course will be a first come, first serve schedule. Anyone registering for a category already filled will be added to the roster for the next course.
$170.00 for tuition and $6.00 for the textbook = $176.00 per course; course includes one Category, Baseline written test, one special category written and tactile test and Textbook. Additional special category tests for Tactile One, Two or Three are $40.00 each. Tuition fees are not refundable once instruction begins.
(1) Passenger cars/trucks 17,000 lbs. or less and Trailers 10,000 lbs. or less; (2) Motorcycles; (3) Buses/trucks over 17,000 lbs. and trailers over 10,000 lbs.
Vehicle Equipment and Inspection Regulations is required for the course. The cost of the textbook is included in the tuition cost. If you want the textbook sent to you, include $4.95 for postage. Students must have the text at the start of class.
Individuals are required to fill out form application MV-409. This form is available at SUN TECH, or by going to http://www.dot3.state.pa.us/pdotforms/mv_forms/mv-409.pdf; and shall be submitted to the school for registration.
Mechanic Identification shall be made before the start of course and again before each tactile test. Registered students shall provide a Pennsylvania Photo License (Photo License and application should have the same address; if you moved, PENN DOT, Bureau of Motor Vehicles, Harrisburg, 17104-2516 needs to be notified within 15 days of such move) or in the case of out- of-state licensed drivers, the out-of-state license and a photo I.D. (out-of-state licensed drivers must supply a Photo I.D. license). Note: Students not able to supply adequate I.D. will not be allowed to participate in the instruction or complete the required tests.
Students must have a score of 70% or above on all tests. If 20 question special category written tests are 70% or above, scheduling for respective tactile test will be arranged. Students will be notified of written test results within 7 days of taking the test. 9. The Tactile test is a pass/fail type test.
Students who fail:
Students who fail the tactile tests do not have to retake the written special category examination. However, they must pay the $40.00 fee to retake the tactile portion of Category One, Two or Category Three.
10. Inspection Mechanic Clinic, Course No. 026 is provided by SUN TECH for students requiring additional training to pass Safety Inspection Mechanic Training Program. Additional information is available on request.
