SUN Tech Students Display at Capital |

SUN Tech Electrical Systems Technology students Kyle Sierer and
Jess Mizer, both Middleburg students, and Mr. William Shipe,
Electrical Systems Technology Instructor participated in National
Career and Technical Education Week on February 11 & 12, 2003.
They were invited by the Pennsylvania Department of Education,
Bureau of Career & Technical Education, to display and present a
project that they were working on in their Electrical Systems
Technology Program. Kyle and Jesse demonstrated copper cabling
installation and troubleshooting. |

SUN Area Career &
Technology Center, Pennsylvania College of Technology, and the
North and South Campuses of Schuylkill Training Centers, were the
recent sites for this year’s District VI SkillsUSA VICA
Competitions. SkillsUSA VICA is a national vocational student
organization for students enrolled in trade, industrial and
technical education courses.
These contests
involved approximately one hundred and sixty students from SUN
ACTC, Columbia-Montour AVTS, Northumberland County AVTS, Central
Mountain High School, North Schuylkill and South Schuylkill
Training Centers, Northern Tier Career Center, Jersey Shore High
School, and the Pennsylvania College of Technology. These students
competed in both skill and leadership competitive events for the
purpose of selecting those individuals who will advance to the
state level.
Over sixty-five
judges from throughout the state, representing business and
industry were involved in these competitive events, in forty-one
different skill and leadership areas.
First place winners
from SUN Area Career & Technology Center were: Heath Benfer, Kyle
Sierer, Tyson Manning and Alicia Miles, Team Works; Heidi Straub,
Food and Beverage Server; Kariann Wohlschlegel and her model Megan
Maurer, Nail Care; Craig Mull, HVAC; Austin Ritter, Welding;
Dustin Zechman, Collision Repair; Sam Bostian, Precision
Machining; Tony Koser, Diesel Technology; Erin Bowman, Criminal
Justice/ Post-Secondary Division; Brandon Chute, Electronics
Application; Kayla Smith, Prepared Speech; Chrissy Hanselman Lenig,
Extemporaneous Speaking; Krista Cole, Action Skill; and Amanda
Benfer, Job Skill Demo A.
Second place winners
from SUN included: Gregg Marshall, Job Interview; Jason Matrey,
Brick Masonry: Daniel Kitchens, Culinary Arts; Caleb Parrish, Auto
Service Technology; Aaron Eberhart, Diesel Technology, and Joshua
Llewellyn, Criminal Justice/ Secondary Division.
Third place SUN
winners were: Heather Farnsworth, Technical Math; Travis Catherman,
Plumbing; Andrew Kramer, Carpentry; Michelle Snook, Cosmetology;
and Craig Hollenbach, Electronics Technology
Also participating in district contests were Heather Farnsworth,
Architectural Drafting; Ken Dieffenbach, Technical Drafting; and
Jesse Mizer, Residential Wiring.
All first place
medal winners will advance to compete at the state level. Also
attending the state conference will be individuals receiving byes,
which include Grace Bowersox, Advertising Design; Amber Bilger,
Promotional Bulletin Board; and Michelle Snook, Delegate.
The SkillsUSA VICA Pennsylvania Leadership and Skill Conference
will be held at Willow Valley Conference Center, Lancaster and the
Berks County Career and Technology Center, March 31, April 1 & 2.

SkillsUSA VICA
Skills USA VICA is a national organization that serves high school
and college students and professional members who are enrolled in
training programs in technical, skilled, and service occupations,
including health occupations. SkillsUSA VICA prepares America's
high performance workers. It provides quality education
experiences for students in leadership, teamwork, citizenship, and
character development. It builds and reinforces self-confidence,
work attitudes, and communications skills. It emphasizes total
quality, high ethical standards, superior work skills, life-long
education and pride in the dignity of work. SkillsUSA VICA also
promotes understanding of the free enterprise system and involvement
in community service activities. SkillsUSA VICA programs include
local, state and national competitions in which students demonstrate
occupational and leadership skills.

Activities
HOSA
The Health and Occupations Students of America (HOSA) exists to assist
students in developing leadership and technical skill competencies.
It is intended for those who plan to enter careers that provide care
and health services.
HOSA is an integral
part of Health Occupations. Through HOSA students develop a
better understanding, an awareness of social intelligence, civic
consciousness, and leadership skills. HOSA members have the
opportunity to strengthen their skills by HOSA activities, by
interacting with professionals in health related fields, business
people, and other HOSA members.
HOSA Activities
Some of the activities in which the SUN TECH Chapter of HOSA will
engage in are as follows:
- Collect food during the Holiday Season.
- Take blood pressure at school and at a local mall
- Participate in Dental Education Programs.
- Sell Daffodils for the American Cancer Society.
- Assist with The Children's Miracle Telethon and make a
contribution to this HOSA national priority.
- Sell various products to support chapter activities.
- Participate in HOSA competition.
- Conduct regular Chapter meetings, some involving guest
speakers.
- Take field trips to health care facilities and a community
college.
Students in the Dental Assisting Program and the Health Assistant
Program can participate in the HOSA Chapter at the SUN TECH.
They follow the HOSA motto: "The Hands of HOSA Mold the Health of
Tomorrow."
