The Diesel and Truck Technology course at SUN Tech prepares you for higher education or employment in the field of truck and bus repair or maintaining diesel engines and other related equipment used to power ships, trains, electric generators and construction machinery.  A working knowledge of the trade is taught through theory and practice, disassembly of diesel engines, clutches, brakes (hydraulic and air brakes), electrical systems and electronic trouble shooting. If you are trained in Diesel Technology you can secure employment as a technician working on trucks, buses, agricultural and construction equipment.  You will be given the opportunity to attain a Pennsylvania Vehicle Safety Inspection license and prepare to take the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) tests.

Post-Secondary Opportunities

Students enrolled in the Diesel Truck Technology program have the opportunity to earn the following college credits while attending SUN Tech, thanks to the Penn College Dual Enrollment program from Penn College of Technology:

The work habits developed through classroom, hands-on, and computer-based exercises in the Diesel and Truck Technology program, leave students well prepared for continued higher education. Students can receive advanced placement at: The Pennsylvania College of Technology in Williamsport and University of Northwestern Ohio in Lima OH. Some recent graduates have chosen to attend other colleges such as: Wyoming Technical Institute in Blairsville PA; and Universal Technical Institute with multiple campuses.

Diesel Technology graduates may also receive further training from employers, such as dealership training programs or military technical schools.

Employment

Students in the Diesel and Truck Technology program have the opportunity to become involved in cooperative education. In the months of March, April, and May, students meeting the requirements may work for a local Diesel repair facility during school hours. During this time, students will earn school credit as well as receive “real-world” experience in the Diesel repair trade. In addition, a student involved in cooperative education will be paid for his or her time worked by the employer.

Some students in this program stay employed with the employer after graduation. Others may use the experience on a resume after graduation from higher education. In either case, this type of experience is extremely valuable to the student and future employers.
